Laninya

Laniñya is a name I derived from the Spanish word La niña, a name suggest to me by my brother. It translates to ‘the girl-child’ and is the name given to the current wet cycle Australia is experiencing. La niña has brought the rain that has ended the droughts, but also brought with it floods and cyclones.

I found the name perfect as it represented many elements of my first painting. I’d worked on this paining during a time of crazy wet weather, floods and cyclones. I was empathising with what these people must be experiencing and feeling. Subconsciously, the lower abstract area of my painting are aquatic plants. My subject is a girl, powered by the female elements of the moon and water. My painting also symbolises my personal transformation as an artist, moving to liquid medium of paint and distorting the reality of my subject.

If you are in Melbourne, come and see her at Ranch Notorious before she goes to her new home! She is for the groups show ‘Up The Bend’ that opens this Friday night.

There are so many little areas in this piece that I could pick as favourites – I just can’t decide!

So how did you find painting Miss Bec? I want to hear all about it! I think Round 1 is pretty damn amazing, so when’s Round 2? ;)
